The millionaire hero, Sherman McCoy, is ripe for humiliation and finds it in plenty at the police Central Booking Bureau in the Bronx. There, after a freak accident involving muggers, his Mercedes and his mistress, McCoy learns that prosecutors, politicians and press are lining up to devour him with shameless relish.
