Harriet grows up ignored and unguided. Her husband Freddie is companionable rather than romantic and disapproves of Harriet's friend Tessa and her husband Jack. They are all bound together by their daughters and Harriet's feelings for Jack. Tessa's early death, and the choices Harriet has made lead to a tragedy which could not have been foreseen.
