Richard Goodwin had learned the secrets of the silk trade at Harcourt's mill. Richard left his family to seek work in a rival mill. When the Harcourts faced a dilemma, he had to decide whether to return to revenge upon the family which had wronged his own or whether the silk maker's talents would be the force which would bridge the gap between the two families.
