Shackleton
Shackleton
An Anglo-Irishman, Ernest Shackleton left school at 16 and joined the Merchant Marine. In 1900 he applied to join the "Discovery" expedition under Scott, and together with Edward Wilson, the three men achieved a new "Furthest South". His rivalry with Scott sowed the seeds to make his own attempt at the South Pole.
