Den unge advokaten Galip kommer en dag hem och finner att hans fru är försvunnen. Han ger sig ut på ett labyrintiskt sökande efter henne genom Istanbul. Romanen är en lovsång till staden, men samtidigt det är en olycklig kärlekssaga och spännande som en detektivroman. Orhan Pamuk tilldelades Nobelpriset i litteratur år 2006.
